As it reaches its 50th anniversary, the European Tour rebrands as the DP World Tour

From the start of the 2022 season, the European Tour will be renamed the DP World Tour, with a total prize pool of more than $200 million (£147 million). The new global tour will have 47 tournaments in 27 countries, with new events in the UAE, Japan, South Africa, and Belgium. For the first time, three events will be co-sponsored by the PGA Tour.

The move comes as the European Tour celebrates its 50^th anniversary, having been launched in 1972.

Pelley said, “This tremendously substantial deal will benefit the entire ecosystem of our tour. That was critical for us and DP World, who have been tremendous supporters of our tour and golf in general, from grassroots to peak professional levels.” 

As a result, the DP World Tour is a natural evolution of our ten-year cooperation, and the inclusion of “World” in our new title better reflects our global reach.

The three events co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour are part of the strategic alliance agreed between the two organisations last year, and all events purely sanctioned by the DP World Tour will have a minimum prize pool of $2 million (£1.47 million).

The prestigious Rolex Series will expand from four to five tournaments, with the season-ending DP World Tour Championship being the first regular European Tour event with a prize pool of $10 million (£7.35 million). The Joburg Open in South Africa, which occurs from November 22 to 25, will be the first event of the 2022 season.

Since 2009, when the Order of Merit was replaced by the Race to Dubai, which now culminates in the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai-based DP World has been involved with the European Tour.
