Sania Mirza and her partner Rohan Bopanna of India reach the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles at the Australian Open

Sania Mirza, who was competing in her final Grand Slam, had already retired from the women’s doubles tournament.

She was playing in her farewell Grand Slam match, and Rohan Bopanna of India won in straight sets in the second round of the Australian Open’s mixed doubles competition on Monday.

The team defeated the Japanese-Uruguayan team of Makota Ninomiya and Ariel Behar 6-4, 7-6 (9), on Court 7 in 1 hour and 17 minutes.

When Mirza and Bopanna led by a break in the second set, it appeared they would win easily. However, Ninomiya and Behar fought back valiantly to win by a break and push a tie-break.

After wasting a few points in a row, Mirza and her partner Bopanna eventually prevailed, to the overwhelming applause of the stadium’s Indian spectators.

The Australian top teams, Luke Saville and Jaimee Fourlis were defeated by the Indian team earlier in the round, 7-5, 6-3.

Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine and Alison van Uytvanck of Belgium defeated Mirza and her Kazakh teammate Anna Danilina in women’s duets on Monday, ending Mirza’s Grand Slam tennis career.

The 36-year-old Indian tennis star is not quite over, though. On Tuesday, she and Bopanna will compete against the Latvian-Spanish team of Jelena Ostapenko and David Vega Hernandez in the quarterfinals of the combined doubles tournament.

Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N. Sriram Balaji, another Indian combination that had been selected as an additional pair for the Australian Open, both withdrew after losing 4-6, 4-6 to Frenchmen Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin in the second round, putting an end to India’s campaign in men’s partnerships on Sunday.
