Twitter will now prevent users from sending incorrect information to COVID-19.

Twitter and other social media platforms have been great sources of information on many things. However, many people have been abusing the power of social media. To address this, Twitter has announced the inclusion of labels in Tweets that may contain misleading information on COVID policies and will permanently suspend repeat offenders.

The micro-blogging platform has introduced a striking program against misleading tweets and five or more strikes will result in permanent account suspension.

“We believe the strike plan will help educate the public about our policies and also reduce the spread of potentially harmful and misleading information on Twitter, especially in violation of our rules in a balanced and firm manner,” the company said in a statement later Monday.

Since launching the Covid-19 guide, Twitter has said it has removed more than 8,400 Tweets and challenged 11.5 million accounts worldwide.

While one strike is not an account-level action, two strikes will result in a 12-hour account creation; three strikes in another account lock for 12 hours; Four strikes in a 7-day account and five strikes or more means permanent account suspension.

Labels will be used first by members of the Twitter team when they determine that content violates platform policy.

“Our goal is to ultimately use both automatic and human reviews to address content that violates our Covid-19 inappropriate data laws,” Twitter said.

Twitter will start with English language content first and then use the same process as it works to expand to other languages and cultural contexts over time. Labels will appear in the user’s preferred language and may link to selected content with official public health information or Twitter rules.
