The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has captivated millions on Earth and even caught the attention of astronauts in space. NASA astronaut Don Pettit, aboard the International Space Station (ISS), shared stunning images of the event, capturing its mesmerizing glow from 400 kilometers above the planet. Known for his impressive astrophotography, Pettit posted the photos on X (formerly Twitter), commenting, “2025 Maha Kumbh Mela Ganges River pilgrimage from the ISS at night. The largest human gathering in the world is well lit.” The photos vividly highlight the sprawling tent city at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, aglow under constant lighting.

Held once every 144 years, the Maha Kumbh Mela draws millions of pilgrims seeking spiritual enlightenment. The ISS, traveling at 28,000 kilometers per hour, captured the stunning scene using high-powered cameras.

Grand Preparations for the Maha Kumbh
To support the massive event, the Uttar Pradesh government invested ₹400 crore in infrastructure. This included 182 kilometers of high-tension power lines, 40,000 rechargeable bulbs, and cutting-edge security systems with 2,700 CCTV cameras and underwater drones monitoring the Triveni Sangam.

Alongside Don Pettit, astronaut Sunita Williams is also aboard the ISS, on an extended mission with Barry Wilmore. Their return, originally scheduled for February 2025, has been delayed due to issues with the SpaceX Crew 10 launch, which is now set for late March 2025.
