If you’re suffering from lower back pain, it’s best to avoid this food item

Struggling with lower back pain? You might want to reconsider including certain ingredients in your diet. Dr. Jeff Winternheimer DC suggests avoiding corn and its derivatives—such as syrup, sugar, chips, and oil—to help alleviate spinal discomfort. But what’s the connection? Indianexpress.com consulted health expert Dr. Siddhant Bhargava, fitness and nutritional scientist, and co-founder of Food Darzee, to explain.

“While natural, unprocessed corn is healthy, its nutrients diminish during processing, which can negatively impact our bodies. Consuming corn in its whole, unrefined form is preferable,” Dr. Bhargava explains. “Processed corn can trigger inflammation, which may worsen lower back pain.”

Dr. Bhargava notes that inflammation can slow healing and intensify conditions like lower back pain. Additionally, processed corn can cause insulin spikes, leading to further inflammation and weight gain. Extra weight places additional strain on the spine, exacerbating back pain. “Corn does contain B vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber beneficial for overall health, and whole corn has antioxidants that may reduce oxidative stress,” he adds.

To manage lower back pain, Dr. Bhargava recommends an anti-inflammatory diet. Focus on consuming fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants—such as berries, dark leafy greens, and cruciferous vegetables. Include omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), nuts, and seeds. Opt for whole grains over refined ones for better blood sugar stability, and choose legumes like beans or lentils for fiber without the inflammatory effects of red meat.

Incorporating turmeric or ginger into your cooking can also provide anti-inflammatory benefits. Staying hydrated with plenty of water can help maintain overall well-being and reduce muscle stiffness, aiding in the management of lower back pain.
