India’s Meteorological Department Warns of Intense Heatwave This Summer

Heatwave Expected to Intensify Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for most parts of the country, predicting above-normal temperatures throughout the summer. IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that several states could experience more heatwave days than usual, with Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha expected to face 10 to 11 heatwave days.

Rising Temperatures and Health Risks

  • India recorded its highest-ever temperature of 50.5°C on 28 May 2024 in Churu, Rajasthan.
  • Hundreds of deaths are reported every year due to extreme heat.
  • The official death toll due to heatwaves between March and June 2024 was 143, but independent estimates suggest the number could be much higher.

Climate Change and Human Impact

Experts warn that heatwaves will become more frequent if climate action is not taken. India, the world’s third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, relies heavily on coal for power generation, contributing to rising global temperatures. Industrialization, transportation, and population growth are also driving higher carbon emissions.

Mr. Mohapatra cautioned:
“We are endangering not only ourselves but also future generations.”

As temperatures continue to rise, authorities urge precautionary measures to mitigate health risks and protect water resources in the face of worsening climate conditions.
