‘Mahabharata’ to find an OTT home on Disney+ Hotstar, global audience
A generation of Indians who watched “Mahabharata” on Doordarshan as children will be able to see it again on the streaming service Disney+ Hotstar with a modern makeover.
According to “Variety,” it was one of the three Indian titles that were unveiled at the international D23 Expo in Los Angeles. Madhu Mantena, a nephew of Ram Gopal Verma and a former business partner of Anurag Kashyap, along with Mythoversestudios and Allu Entertainment, are the producers of “Mahabharata.”
The return of Karan Johar’s celebrity talk show “Koffee With Karan” for Season 8 following a tremendously successful continuing Season 7 was among the other announcements made. Apoorva Mehta and Anisha Baig are in charge of producing it for Dharmatic Entertainment Productions.
The Bollywood-set drama series “Showtime,” which is also being produced by Johar, Mehta, and Somen Mishra, “will pull the veil on India’s biggest trade secrets in the entertainment industry,” according to the head of Dharmatic.
“Variety” quotes Mantena as saying: “Indian epics have captivated the imagination of billions around the world for centuries. These epics are intricately entwined into the foundation of our country.” The “Mahabharata,” one of the oldest epics in India, is still relevant today because of the numerous teachings and proverbs of wisdom it contains in its lengthy lines.
“Over the last few years, India has grown as a content powerhouse, pushing the envelope with stories that transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries,” said Gaurav Banerjee, Head of Content for Disney+ Hotstar India.
