Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty to enter into force in January
On Saturday, the United Nations reported that 50 nations have sanctioned a U.N. treaty to ban nuclear weapons, which will come into effect in 90 days.
The United States and the other significant nuclear powers are against this move. According to the UN chief Antonio Guterres, this treaty will lead to a worldwide movement “to draw attention to catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons” and “is a tribute to survivors of nuclear explosions and tests, many of whom advocated for this treaty”.
In an interview with AP on Wednesday, he said: We can only be entirely safe from nuclear weapons the day when nuclear weapons no longer exist.
