Pensioners Book 51 Back-to-Back Cruises, Say It’s Cheaper Than a Care Home

Retired Couple Spends Nearly 500 Days at Sea
A retired Australian couple, Marty and Jess Ansen, have been living on cruise ships for nearly 500 days straight, claiming that their unconventional lifestyle is cheaper than staying in a care home. Since June 16, 2022, they have booked 51 consecutive cruises, traveling the world aboard the Coral Princess—even outlasting some of the ship’s captains and crew.
The couple, who previously enjoyed cruising before retirement, found that rather than paying for an expensive senior living facility, living aboard a cruise ship was not only more affordable but also more enjoyable.
Why Living on a Cruise is a Smart Financial Move
With the rising costs of care homes and assisted living facilities, the couple discovered that staying on a cruise ship provides them with meals, medical services, entertainment, and daily housekeeping—all at a lower cost.
Marty explained, “Eventually, I said to my agent, ‘Look, whatever comes, book it,’ and that’s how it got to be such a long cruise.”
After experiencing strict lockdowns in Australia, the couple decided to swap a stationary retirement for a life of adventure at sea. Their story highlights a growing trend where retirees are choosing long-term cruising over traditional senior care.
While not a typical retirement plan, their decision proves that for some, life at sea can be a cost-effective and exciting alternative to aging in place.
