Washington, D.C., is in disarray as hundreds receive bomb threats
Washington, D.C., plunged into panic and disorder after being inundated with bomb threats sent via email, prompting widespread lockdowns across the city. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) swiftly launched an investigation into the threatening emails that targeted numerous schools. Although there is currently no supporting evidence for the threats, law enforcement is actively delving into the origins of nearly 200 threatening emails.
Addressing the situation, the MPD issued a statement on social media, ensuring the public that officers were working closely with D.C. public and charter schools to secure the safety of students and staff. The threats, dispatched just before 11 a.m., created turmoil throughout the city, with residents describing a state of chaos.
Residents shared their experiences on social media, revealing the extensive impact of the threats. Benjamin Armbruster, a D.C. resident and Managing Editor of R Statecraft, disclosed that his child’s elementary school was part of an email chain containing a bomb threat sent to 191 recipients, exacerbating the sense of disorder across the city.
Councilmember Zachary Parker acknowledged concerns raised by constituents regarding bomb threats, emphasising that the threats had triggered evacuations and searches across the city. However, he clarified that there is currently no credible threat to D.C. schools, with law enforcement clearing all Ward 5 schools that received threats.
The College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts also confronted a bomb threat, resulting in evacuations. On-site authorities deemed the threat risk to be low, with Worcester and State Police, along with the Fire Department, conducting searches.
This incident unfolded a week after bomb threat emails targeted government officials in 13 states, prompting disruptions and evacuations in some state capitals. FBI investigations later revealed these threats to be hoaxes, with no explosives found in government buildings.
As Washington, D.C., remains on high alert amid the ongoing investigation into the bomb threats, authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Heightened security measures are deemed crucial to ensuring the safety of residents and students in the city.
