After seeing his club in action for the first time at Maidenhead, Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owner Ryan Reynolds characterised football as soul-deadening, evil and beautiful.
In February, Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney took over the club. At Maidenhead United’s York Road, the pair made their long-awaited debut at a Wrexham match.
As a 10-man team, they stood by and watched. After coming back from 2-0 down, Wrexham were defeated 3-2.

Regardless of the outcome, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds seems to be enjoying his first taste of British football, posting photos from the National League match on Instagram.
Due to filming commitments and the pandemic, Reynolds and McElhenney, both living in the United States, had been limited to watching Wrexham matches via streams. However, the actors were present for a debut game that was full of drama, with Wrexhal down by two goals after 22 minutes and having a player sent off.
Wrexham rallied back to tie the game at 2-2, but Josh Kelly’s goal meant that there would be no fairytale ending on this occasion, with Maidenhead prevailing 3-2.
Reynolds and McElhenney, the creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, have expressed interest in purchasing the north Wales team, which is the world’s third oldest professional club, in September 2020. After the couple gave an online presentation to fans, Wrexham Supporters’ Trust members unanimously voted to support the takeover two months later.
After a terrible decade that saw them enter administration and lose their participation in the Football League in 2008, the team has been under fan control since 2011.
Reynolds and McElhenney, according to Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, recognise the club’s great potential. After finalising their ownership, Reynolds and McElhenney immediately invested £2 million in Wrexham, with their ambition reflected in a series of key signings – including Parkinson’s appointment – in recent months.
Wrexham, on the other hand, have had a mixed start to the 2021-22 season, and after the defeat against Maidenhead, they are currently 11th in the National League. On Saturday, October 30th, Wrexham will host Torquay United at the Racecourse Stadium.
