Usain Bolt moves to trademark signature victory pose

Legendary athlete Usain Bolt has applied to trademark a graphic that displays his typical victory celebration pose.

On Monday, the retired Jamaican sprinter filled up an application and sent it to the US.

Because he frequently struck it after winning gold medals and setting world records, he became well-known for the pose, in which he leans back and gestures to the sky.

The world records for the 100 and 200 metres continue to be held by Mr. Bolt, the all-time fastest athlete.

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Bolt’s trademark application was submitted on August 17.

With one arm raised and pointing aloft and the other bent and pointed to the head, it depicts the silhouette of a man in a recognisable pose.

According to the application, he intends to use the image at restaurants and sports bars, as well as on clothing, jewellery, and shoes.

Given that Bolt has stopped competing in races, Josh Gerben, a trademark attorney in Washington, DC, thinks it makes sense that Bolt would want to grow his business empire.

“The silhouette of his victory pose is recognisable all across the world. With the help of this trademark registration, he could either sell the products listed in the application himself or grant third parties a licence to use the mark, according to Mr. Gerben. Mr. Bolt attempted to register a similar trademark 12 years ago, but it has since become inoperative under US law.

The eight-time Olympic gold champion announced his retirement from the sport at the 2017 World Championships in London.

He could only manage bronze in the men’s 100m, his last race, before withdrawing due to injury from his final event, the 4x100m relay, just as he was preparing to hit his best pace.

“Too many retirees have gone back, either to make things worse or to put themselves in the worst conceivable light,” he said when asked if he would consider racing again. I won’t belong to that group.
