Jennifer Lopez has officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck
Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are divorcing after two years of marriage. Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to documents reviewed by the BBC.
The couple, affectionately known as Bennifer, initially married in Las Vegas in July 2022 and followed with a larger ceremony in Georgia the next month. Their relationship began on the set of the 2003 film Gigli, and although they were set to marry in 2004, they ended their relationship early that year. They rekindled their romance nearly two decades later. “Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” Lopez remarked in 2022 after announcing their Las Vegas wedding.
The BBC has reached out to their representatives for comment. Court filings reveal that Lopez or her attorney must provide Affleck with a copy of the divorce petition. Reports suggest that Lopez, who had legally adopted Affleck as her surname, did not include details of a prenuptial agreement in her divorce petition.
The court documents require both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, to disclose their financial information, including income, expenses, properties, and debts. Both parties are mandated to report any financial changes until all financial issues are resolved. Lopez has 60 days to submit her financial disclosure, followed by an additional 60 days for Affleck to do the same. Failure to update financial information could lead to court-imposed sanctions.
Speculation about their relationship has been ongoing, with reports of them listing their Beverly Hills mansion for $65 million and being seen separately without their wedding rings. Affleck, a two-time Oscar winner, was previously married to actress Jennifer Garner, whom he met during the 2001 film Pearl Harbor. They divorced in 2015 after a decade of marriage and share three children.
Lopez has been married four times: to Cuban-born waiter Ojani Noa (1997-98), former backup dancer Cris Judd (2001-03), and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins (2004-14). She was also engaged to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
