Potential Reinstatement Discussions for Sam Altman at OpenAI Amid Organisational Turmoil
Following the abrupt dismissal of Sam Altman from OpenAI, talks are underway between the ousted CEO and at least one board member to explore the possibility of his reinstatement. This development stems from the majority of OpenAI’s workforce issuing a collective ultimatum: unless Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman are reinstated, a significant exodus of staff is imminent. Adding a layer of complexity, Microsoft, the principal investor in OpenAI, has extended a job offer to Altman.
Reports indicate that OpenAI is navigating various scenarios, contemplating Altman’s return either to his former executive role or as a board director. The uncertainty persists regarding whether Altman will opt for Microsoft, which has not only offered him a position but also pledged to match the remuneration of any OpenAI employees who join the tech giant. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has expressed unwavering commitment to both OpenAI and Altman, expressing openness to multiple outcomes.
Emmett Shear, the ex-head of Twitch and the current interim head of OpenAI, is reportedly playing a role in ongoing negotiations. The recent decision to oust Altman, leading to Brockman’s resignation, has thrown the esteemed AI company into a state of disarray. The decision was initiated by three non-employee board members—Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner—along with Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and the firm’s chief scientist.
In the midst of the turmoil, Sutskever took to social media, offering an apology and endorsing a letter urging the board to reconsider its decision. Notably, despite OpenAI’s reported valuation soaring to $80 billion (£63.8 billion), the board composition comprised only six members as of the previous week.
Evan Morikawa, an engineering manager at OpenAI, revealed that a staggering 743 out of 770 employees have signed a letter demanding the immediate resignation of the board. The staff members are leveraging the threat of a collective departure unless their multifaceted demands, including the reinstatement of Sam Altman, are earnestly addressed.
