AIIMS chief executive Dr Randeep Guleria on Monday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to take the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine on the first day of phase 2 of the Covid-19 vaccination program in India. The second phase will cover the elderly and those aged 45 and over in disasters.
Prime Minister Modi received a Covaxin jab made traditionally by Bharat Biotech on Monday morning.
Dr Guleria said Prime Minister Modi’s action should help dispel doubts in people’s minds about the vaccine.
AIIMS has been threatened with the prime minister’s visit to the hospital to take the vaccine on Sunday night and as a result no special arrangements have been made for him, Dr Guleria told PTI.
“As it was a Sunday, Amitji chose to arrive early in the morning so as not to disturb the other patients in the hospital,” said Dr Guleria.
Dr Guleria said Sister P Niveda, from Puducherry who was in charge of the Covaxin jab to the Prime Minister, was informed of her excellent work only this morning.
AIIMS director said Prime Minister Modi took the firearm at 6.30am after which he was detained for less than half an hour according to the agreement, after which he left.
Prime Minister Modi on Monday took his first Covid-19 vaccine at AIIMS, Delhi and called on all those eligible to be vaccinated.
“I took my first Covid-19 vaccine at AIIMS. It is remarkable how our doctors and scientists worked so fast to intensify the global fight against Covid-19,” said Prime Minister Modi after holding the vaccine.
“I urge all who deserve to get this policy. Together, let us all make India Covid-19 free!” he said.
