Smith didn’t make it to the Australia T20 World Cup squad
Former captain Steve Smith has been excluded from Australia’s roster for the T20 World Cup in June in the Caribbean and the USA. The decision follows a string of poor performances against New Zealand in February, where he managed scores of only 11 and four.
Additionally, promising batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk has also been left out, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will lead the team, and seasoned opener David Warner has been chosen for what might be his final international tournament.
George Bailey, the selection chief, emphasized the importance of crafting a squad that offers the best chance of success in the upcoming campaign. He mentioned extensive deliberations regarding Smith’s inclusion and expressed interest in Fraser-McGurk’s performance, noting the latter’s impressive form with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
The 15-man squad features experienced players like Test captain Pat Cummins, fast bowler Mitchell Starc, and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, with 11 members having been part of Australia’s victorious 2021 T20 World Cup campaign.
